Place Metaphors in Digimech Learning Environments
نویسنده
چکیده
In the recent years, the usage of 3D Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) for educational purposes has increased. The metaphors behind the design of virtual places are quite diverse, from replication of real universities to art museums and scientific labs. At the same time, recent technological developments have opened new perspectives for the cooperation between human learners, virtual humans and anthropomorphic robots, thus extending the realm of CVEs to an augmented virtual reality continuum, where real and virtual parts supplement and influence each other. This kind of learning environments can be defined as DigiMech Learning Environments (DMLE). The goal of this paper is to provide a characterization of place metaphors for the augmented environments of DMLE. It will serve as a background for future design of such environments for different educational goals.

DigiMech Learning Environments: supporting social awareness in a community of humans, virtual humans and anthropomorphic robots
Recent technological developments have opened new perspectives for the cooperation between human learners, virtual humans and anthropomorphic robots, especially in an augmented virtual reality continuum. This kind of learning environments can be defined as DigiMech Learning Environments (DMLE). The richness and variety of users’ possible interactions in such environments go far beyond the simpl...

provides a coordination mechanism to help to maintain an interaction order among the participants and to make it more efficient. The collaborative virtual environments have become a good alternative to construct collaborative learning systems. In this paper we present DeskTOP, a collaborative virtual environment implemented on the Web to support and to promote collaborative learning in universi...
متن کاملL2 Learners’ Stylistic Penchant and Perceived Aptness for Metaphors and Similes
Aptness, defined as how the vehicle is well able to cover the salient features of the tenor (e.g., oil is like liquid gold vs. a train is like a worm), is claimed to be an important factor in the preference for metaphors over similes, or vice versa. This study was an attempt to test for the supposed correlation between the perceived degree of aptness and a priori stylistic preference for metaph...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF COGNITIVE FUNCTION OF METAPHORS ON TEACHING ECONOMIC TERMS TO IRANIAN ECONOMIC MAJORS IN ESP COURSES
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two strategies of explicit teaching of economic terms on learners' vocabulary learning and retention. In the first explicit strategy, known as 'etymological elaboration', the focus was on presenting conceptual metaphors through 'identify-the-source' tasks, that is, providing the learners with the source domains underlying the metaphors,...
متن کاملVirtual Cultural Identities
Virtual environments and the Internet provide an important medium for interactive collaborative learning. Immersive Virtual Environments appear able to support intuitive interaction techniques and metaphors. Our Identity Authoring Approach is aimed at our multicultural global society, and allows for multiple identities / persona to be created and used as interaction metaphors by users. The appr...
